Volunteer Fire Department

Radebeul-East

2018 Competition, 1st Prize Construction period: 2023–2026

Between the countryside and the city—on Schildenstraße, where open space meets the urban landscape of Radebeul-Ost—a fire station is taking shape, developing a distinctive typology based on existing architectural forms. The new building translates glass greenhouses and historic gabled-roof houses into an L-shaped structure with a translucent profiled glass façade that combines robustness and lightness.

The building’s form shields the property to the north from the railroad tracks and opens up to the south toward the landscape. The vehicle hall serves as a showcase facing the street—visibility and readiness are on display. At the rear, a sheltered courtyard is being created for outdoor work, drills, and community activities.

Two canopies define the building: the canopy at the emergency response yard, which serves as storage space for responding vehicles, and the recessed entrance, which functions as the main entrance. The one- and two-story structure, constructed of precast reinforced concrete elements and a lightweight steel roof, organizes the building’s functions consistently to minimize response times.

The roof is equipped with a photovoltaic system. Power is supplied via an air-source heat pump and radiant floor heating.

The new building addresses contemporary questions: How can one create urban qualities through a purely functional building project? How can infrastructure buildings foster a sense of identity? How should one carefully handle urban interstitial spaces—at the transition between city and landscape? How can one offer well-designed places within a society?
