The Futurium is an exhibition and event venue located in the heart of Berlin—nestled between the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Spreebogen, and Humboldthafen, as well as the main train station and the Charité campus. Within this complex, the Futurium takes on a distinctive sculptural form. Designed as an energy-plus building, the Futurium has achieved BNB Gold status in sustainability ratings.
The butterfly-shaped unfolding of the building’s form into urban landmarks gives the Futurium its visual impact between the Spree and the elevated railway. Two plazas are created along the main access routes, Alexanderufer and Kapelle-Ufer, by setting back the building line.
A dot pattern covers the entire plaza surface, giving it a distinctive character.
The façade consists of over 8,000 cassette elements. Each 70x70 cm element comprises differently folded metal reflectors and ceramic-printed cast glass. These create an iridescent cloud-like pattern that constantly shifts with the incidence of light.
The new building serves as a venue for presentations and to foster dialogue between research and development. Through exhibitions and events, future-oriented developments of national and international significance are brought to light.
