The new building for the Burg Giebichenstein Art Campus creates a contemporary counterpart to the historic castle. As a self-assured urban landmark, it straddles Seebener Straße and, through its subtly varying volume, mediates between the city, the street, and the courtyard. A forecourt on the west side frames the entrance and the connection to the castle, while to the south, open workshops engage with the terraced slope to create a unique sense of open space.
The building is organized into two main levels: The ground floor houses the entrance, cafeteria, gallery, and a connected complex of workshops. Above these are the studios and offices of the academic departments, linked by a foyer featuring a sculptural staircase that serves as a central gathering place. Three courtyards structure the upper floor and create spaces for contemplative outdoor work—areas for gathering and retreat far from traffic noise.
The roof surfaces and facade windows, consistently oriented toward the north, provide even natural light for artistic production. The individual gables give rhythm to the building and lend it a distinctive character within the urban fabric between the castle, the church, and the small-scale perimeter block development. Despite their similarities, each studio possesses an individual character due to its location and roof volume—inserted gallery levels offer elevated vantage points and provide access to seminar rooms.
