Educational Center

Wolfsburg

Competition 2014 With JUCA Landschaftsarchitektur.

Sculpturally nestled in the green foothills of Klieversberg Park, the Bildungshaus Wolfsburg continues the tradition of standalone park buildings. Its blossom-like unfolding into urban landmarks gives it visual prominence at the intersection of city and landscape. The guiding principle of solidarity unites the diversity of the institutions into a ring—this inspires the crossing of boundaries and defines a shared center.

Facades visible from afar and generously covered entrance areas intuitively guide visitors to the central plaza of the educational center. From here, the spaces are organized into zones for communication, learning, and reflection. Balconies and a sheltered rooftop garden provide open spaces for educational activities, events, and relaxation. A wraparound skywalk on the roof landscape opens up views of photovoltaic panels, the city skyline, and the educational horizon.
Green spaces flow around the building from the park and extend in patches all the way to Heinrich-Heine-Straße. Sunken courtyards between the New School and the Education Center function as educational gardens, enriching the learning experience both in terms of content and atmosphere. The double-skin façade provides optimal sound insulation, and its special pattern optimizes solar energy gain depending on orientation. The robust structural system ensures flexibility for the future by separating load-bearing and non-load-bearing elements.
