Black Forest Nature Park Center

Baiersbronn

Competition 2015

At Ruhestein, where the diverse facets of the Black Forest come together in a captivating way, the visitor center is integrated into the forest itself as an extension of it. Four tree-like structures stand on stilts at the edge of the natural slope, forming a shared clearing. They are as tall and as deep as the forest itself—from the view above the treetops to beneath the roots, the forest can be experienced in all its facets.

The basic structure is based on an interplay of open spaces and vertical circulation routes, which allow for a wide variety of exhibition scenarios and flexible spatial configurations. A panoramic elevator traces the forest’s nutrient cycle and leads to the top floor, where an impressive panoramic view of the Northern Black Forest sets the tone. From there, visitors move downward through the diverse exhibition themes across the floors. In the center of the building is a multi-story kinetic display of the forest ecosystem.

Structurally, the design combines reinforced concrete for the load-bearing basement levels with wood from sustainable forestry for the above-ground structural framework and facades. Tree-like, branching exterior supports stiffen the building wings and contrast with the renewable resource of the Black Forest. Natural ventilation, compressor-free cooling, and photovoltaics ensure virtually CO₂-free operation.
